Questions to ask an electrician

By the Find A Trade Local teamPublished 9 August 2026 · Last reviewed 9 August 20263 min read

Electrical quotes are easier to compare once you know exactly what is being certified and who is making good afterwards.

Registration and paperwork

  • Which competent-person scheme are you registered with, and what is your number?
  • Is any of this work notifiable, and who notifies building control?
  • Which certificate will I receive, and when?
  • Will you test the existing installation before adding to it?

Scope and price

  • Does the price include chasing walls, lifting floors and making good?
  • Are accessories such as sockets, switches and light fittings included, and at what specification?
  • Will the power be off, and for how long?
  • Is there a risk of finding older wiring that changes the scope, and what happens if you do?

Aftercare

  • What guarantee applies to your workmanship?
  • Who do I contact if a breaker trips after the work?
  • Will you leave a schedule of the circuits and what they cover?

Post your electrical job and get answers before you commit.
