How to get more local trade work
Most tradespeople do not have a work problem, they have a pipeline problem: quiet weeks arrive because nothing was being fed in during the busy ones. Getting more local work consistently comes down to three things — being findable when someone needs you, replying before your competitors do, and making it easy to say yes to your quote.
Know where your work comes from
For most UK trade businesses the mix is repeat customers and referrals, local search, and lead sources such as job marketplaces. The mistake is relying on one. Referrals dry up seasonally, search takes months to build, and leads cost money. Running all three keeps the diary full without any single one having to carry it.
Be findable
- Claim and complete a Google Business Profile with your service area, hours, photos and categories. It is free and it is where most 'near me' searches land.
- Keep a complete profile on the platforms you use, including your Find A Trade Local profile — an incomplete profile loses to a complete one every time.
- Cover the right area. Setting an enormous radius wastes your time; setting too small a one starves the pipeline.
- Collect reviews steadily rather than in bursts.
Reply fast
Response speed is the single strongest predictor of who wins a domestic job. Customers commonly hire the first credible person who answers properly, not the cheapest one who answers on Thursday. If you cannot reply properly during the day, send a short holding message with a time you will come back.
Quote clearly
A quote that lists the work, the materials, the exclusions and the timescale wins against a bare number even when it is higher, because it removes the customer's uncertainty. Our guides on pricing a job and what to include in a quote go into detail.
Stop chasing the wrong work
- Define the jobs you want: size, trade, distance and value.
- Decline politely and quickly when something is outside that — a fast no protects your time and your reputation.
- Track what you win and lose. Most people discover they win a specific job type far more often than the rest.

Frequently asked questions
- How much should I spend on leads?
- Work back from your conversion rate. If you win one in four leads and your average job is worth £600 in profit, a £4.99 lead is inexpensive. Track it for a month rather than guessing.
- Is it worth advertising locally?
- Vehicle signage, boards on live jobs and a complete Google Business Profile deliver more per pound for most small trade businesses than paid advertising does.
