To find a tradesperson near you, work outwards from your postcode rather than inwards from a search engine. Most trades set a working radius around their base, and the people inside that radius will quote faster, charge less for travel and return more willingly for snagging.

How far is reasonable?

For small repairs and call-outs, ten to fifteen miles is typical. For a multi-day job such as a bathroom, an extension or a re-roof, tradespeople will often travel thirty miles or more because the travel cost is spread across the whole project. If someone is travelling a long way for a two-hour job, expect a call-out charge to reflect it.

1. Post the job with your postcode and let tradespeople who cover that area come to you — this is usually the fastest route because you are not chasing anyone.

Give your location properly

A full postcode gets you a better response than a town name. It tells a tradesperson exactly how far the job is, whether parking is likely to be an issue and whether it falls inside a low-emission or controlled parking zone. If you would rather not publish the full postcode, the first half of it (the outcode) is enough for accurate matching.

What to expect once you post

Interest usually arrives within hours for common trades in populated areas, and can take a day or two for specialist work or rural postcodes. If nothing comes back after 48 hours, widen the description slightly, add a photo, or check that the trade category matches the work.
